Dust Report01

The Dyson Dust Report uncovered the truth about harmful allergens inside Singapore homes.

We commissioned a microbiology lab at the National University of Singapore to collect dust samples from 27 homes in Singapore.

Equipped with the Dyson V6 cordless vacuum cleaners, we collected two sets of dust samples from floors, mattresses and furniture.

Dust Report02

The average gram of dust collected contained bacteria, mould and dust mites.

Following analysis, we found that the average gram of dust collected contained high concentrations of bacteria, mould and dust mites, all of which can cause severe allergic reactions.

Dust Report03

Three species of dust mites were found.

The European, American and Tropical species of dust mite were found. Mattresses in particular had the highest concentrations of dust mite allergens, such as their faecal matter.

Levels of dust mite antigens were high enough to trigger allergies.

Dust mite antigen concentrations often exceed safe levels in Singapore. When levels exceed 2μg/g, dust mite allergies can develop. The highest concentration found was 6.66μg/g, three times higher than acceptable levels. This may cause allergy symptoms such as shortness of breath, itchy skin and rhinitis.

Beds contained mould colonies that can cause lung infections.

The average mattress contained 3,000 cfu of mould per 1g of dust. The highest mould concentration sampled was 9,300 cfu/g, which was well above acceptable levels. A variety of moulds were discovered, many of which can cause lung infections and asthma.

Harmful dust stays in the air and can affect long-term health.

Harmful dust and allergenic particles don’t just stay on surfaces. They stay in the air and can affect long-term health. These ultrafine particles that range between 0.1 to 2.5 microns contain traces of harmful chemicals and bacteria. Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter may be linked to chronic bronchitis, aggravated asthma, reduced lung function, increased mortality and other serious health problems.

Conventional cleaning leaves allergens behind.

Mops and brooms can cause more problems than they solve. Sweeping and dusting stirs dust and fine particles back into the air, while mopping simply pushes wet dust and allergens around and into floor crevices.
