It all started with a problem. We were frustrated by big and bulky conventional motors, so in 1999 our engineers took it upon themselves to challenge the design of ‘off-the-shelf’ motors. Four years later our engineers unveiled our revolutionary Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor – the X020.
The first generation of the Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor – X020 was manufactured in Singapore in 2004. This led to the eventual inception of Dyson’s first owned manufacturing centre in Singapore in 2012 and another centre set up in the Philippines in 2016.
Over the years, our production lines have been setting the benchmark for Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor production, making impressive strides and reaching one milestone to another. In July 2023, our teams celebrated an important milestone and manufactured our 150,000,000th (150 million) motor. It took 17 years to manufacture 100m motors, and just two years later we manufactured 50m more in a fraction of the time.
Made in South East Asia
When the Singapore Advanced Manufacturing (SAM) centre first opened its door, there were only two production lines. Now we have 6 lines in SAM, supported by 373 engineers. We manufacture the Dyson V4 Motor which powers Dyson Airblade technologies; the Dyson V9 Motor for our Hair care technologies; plus four lines dedicated to the Dyson V10 Motor and one line for our latest Motor, the Dyson Gen5 motor which sits inside the Dyson Gen5detect™ vacuum.
To meet growing demand for our machines, we opened a new campus in the Philippines which was quickly established as a worldwide centre of manufacturing excellence. Today, Dyson Philippines manufactures 13 million Dyson Hyperdymium™ motors a year, across 6 lines which is made possible by 461 engineers. In May 2023, we announced the development of a new technology campus in the Philippines which will further expand our motor manufacturing capabilities.

Not all motors are made equal
Engineers come together across the UK, Singapore, Philippines and Malaysia to constantly iterate, which helps to unlock new categories for Dyson. Our motors are a core technology for Dyson and help us deliver technology superiority. Few companies develop their own motors and have to buy off-the-shelf motors. Dyson digital motors run at 135,000rpm, four times the speed of any other motor to generate greater power from smaller, more efficient motors.
Our latest motor, the Dyson Gen5 motor, is smaller, faster and more powerful than its predecessor, spinning at up at 135,000rpm – up to nine times faster than a Formula One engine. This power enables the Gen5detect™ vacuum to have the most powerful suction of any Dyson cordless machine. Engineers built this motor around a shorter shaft, and combined multiple parts into one, allowing for a more compact format, wrapped in a single piece of precision moulded frame to ensure maximum power efficiency.
Celebrating
To celebrate this milestone, our manufacturing teams at SAM and PAM came together to recognise their achievements.
