Celebrating 100 million Dyson motors made in Singapore

It all started with a problem. In 1999, conventional motors were bulky and heavy, making it impractical to use, especially in a cordless vacuum. Dyson engineers took it upon themselves to think differently, and pioneered the revolutionary Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor.

The first generation of the Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor – the X020 – was manufactured here in Singapore in 2004, marking the beginning of Dyson’s Singapore story. This led to the inception of Dyson’s first manufacturing centre, Singapore Advanced Manufacturing (SAM).

Made in Singapore

When we first opened the doors to SAM in 2012, there were only 2 production lines. Now, our manufacturing centre has grown to 7 lines, working around the clock over the past 13 years to produce one motor every two seconds.

The state-of-the-art facility houses over 300 robots which ensure the production lines run at lightning speed. Some are equipped with vision systems, where the robots can detect and interpret what’s happening in the production line and intelligently assemble the motor in under 10 seconds, while ensuring its quality. The application of automation technologies in our manufacturing processes enables us to assemble our motors with a very high level of precision – measured in microns. This level of precision and the speed of assembly are necessary in delivering high performance motors that meet the robust standards of quality and performance of our Dyson machines.

Making 100 million motors

From creating the world’s first bagless vacuum, to reinventing the hair dryer, Dyson has been on a tremendous journey. Sitting at the heart of these global, iconic innovations is the Dyson Hyperdymium motor – developed and manufactured in Singapore by our local teams, fuelling Dyson’s growth.

This year, SAM achieves the remarkable milestone with our 100 millionth motor produced in Singapore. Despite being small in size, lining up all the motors would span 7,500km – approximately the distance between London and Beijing!

“We’ve come a long way since making the very first Dyson motor back in 2004. Our teams in SAM have continued to evolve and innovate through the years, playing a pivotal role in Dyson’s growth journey globally. This milestone is a recognition of their efforts, and a testament to our advanced manufacturing and execution capabilities in Singapore.”

Powering Dyson’s latest innovations

  • When teams were developing the Dyson PencilVac™, the slimmest vacuum cleaner1, our engineers were given a challenging task – to create a motor capable of delivering powerful suction, while being small enough to fit the 38mm handle.

Our teams had to re-engineer the entire format of the motor, miniaturising the technology. This resulted in the new Dyson Hyperdymium™ 140k motor – Dyson’s smallest and fastest motor, spinning at 140,000rpm, nine times faster than a Formula One engine, and measuring just 28mm, roughly the size of an old Singapore 50-cent coin2. It is 34% more powerful than its predecessor, the V9 motor, and generates 55 air watts of powerful suction for the Dyson PencilVac™.

But the challenges did not stop after design. Our engineers then had to engineer our automated manufacturing lines at SAM to be able to put these next-generation motors into production, and at scale. Today, these production lines have been precisely engineered to assemble parts with micron-level accuracy, down to a tolerance of 5µm (smaller than the diameter of a red blood cell) – a feat no human hand could ever achieve.

As we celebrate a Singapore milestone this National Day, Dyson celebrates the achievements of our local teams in Singapore for hitting the significant milestone of 100 million motors – and counting.
